REDRAFTING NEW YORK RANGERS FOR A DECADE (2003-2013)

 


The New York Rangers struggled to draft during the mid 2000s and into the 2010s, which might be a reason why they never were thought of as a legit contender at the time. If the Rangers had drafted correctly, they might have been able to build a championship caliber team.

In this blog, I will be redrafting the New York Rangers for a decade in hopes of turning them into a contending team.


2003:

12-Brent Burns over Hugh Jessiman

50-Corey Crawford over Ivan Baranka

209-Dustin Byfuglien over Dylan Reese

243-Matt Moulson over Jan Marek

In the 2003 redraft, the Rangers fare much better than they did originally; they get two star players in Brent Burns and Dustin Byfuglien, they also get a good goalie in Corey Crawford and decent complementary goal scorer in Matt Moulson.


2004:

19-Travis Zajac over Loui Korpikoski

36-Brandon Dubinsky over Darin Olver

48-Alex Goligoski over Dane Byers

73-Alexander Edler over Zdenek Bahensky

The Rangers add two very good defenseman in Alex Goligoski and Alex Edler, as well as two solid centers in Travis Zajac and Brandon Dubinsky.

2005:

12-TJ Oshie over Marc Staal

40-Paul Stastny over Michael Sauer

56-Kris Letang over Marc-Andre Cliche

178-Patric Hornqvist over Greg Beller

The Rangers add three important forwards to their roster in TJ Oshie, Paul Stastny and Patric Hornqvist, as well as a star defenseman in Kris Letang.


2006:

21-Claude Giroux over Bobby Sanguinetti

54-Brad Marchand over Artem Anisimov

84-Mathieu Perreault over Ryan Hiller

174-Leo Komarov over Eric Hunter

The Rangers strike gold in this draft landing Claude Giroux and Brad Marchand, two superstar players, as well as two solid role players in Perreault and Komarov.


2007:

17-Max Pacioretty over Alexei Cherepanov

48-Evgenii Dadonov over Antoine Lafleur

138-Carl Hagelin over Max Campbell

168-Nick Bonino

The Rangers add an all star caliber winger in Max Pacioretty as well as well as three very good complementary forwards in Evgenii Dadonov, Carl Hagelin and Nick Bonino.


2008:

20-Jordan Eberle over Michael Del Zotto

53-Derek Stepan

90-Braden Holtby over Tomas Kundratek

111-Gustav Nyquist over Dale Weise

The Rangers add three very good forwards in Jordan Eberle, Derek Stepan and Gustav Nyquist and a great goalie in Braden Holtby.


2009:

19-Chris Kreider

47-Reilly Smith over Ethan Werek

80-David Savard over Ryan Bourque

140-Mike Hoffman over Roman Horak

The Rangers hit the jackpot in this draft, landing 4 high impact players in Chris Kreider, Reilly Smith, Mike Hoffman and David Savard.


2010:

10-Cam Fowler over Dylan McIlrath

40-Tyler Toffoli over Christian Thomas

100-John Klingberg over Andrew Yogan

138-Mark Stone over Jason Wilson

In 2010, the Rangers draft 4 great players in Tyler Toffoli, John Klingberg and Cam Fowler, as well as a star player in Mark Stone.


2011:

15-JT Miller

72-JG Pageau over Steven Fogarty

136-Josh Manson over Samuel Noreau

172-Ryan Dzingel over Peter Ceresnak

The Rangers get 4 very good complementary players in JT Miller, JG Pageau, Josh Manson and Ryan Dzingel; they will be solid role players on the team.


2012:

28-Chris Tierney over Brady Skjei

59-Esa Lindell over Cristoval Nieves

119-Connor Hellebuyck over Calle Andersson

142-Alex Kerfoot over Thomas Spelling

The Rangers hit the jackpot in this draft adding a stud goalie in Connor Hellebuyck as well as a top pair defenseman in Esa Lindell. Chris Tierney and Alex Kerfoot give them depth on the team dwon the road.


2013:


65-Jake Guentzel over Adam Tambellini

78-Anthony Duclair over Pavel Buchnevich

110-Ryan Graves

170-Andreas Johnsson over Mackenzie Skapski


Mathieu Perreault, Leo Komarov leave in free agency in the 2013 offseason.


The New York Rangers make a few trades due to salary cap purposes:


New York Rangers trade Corey Crawford, Brandon Dubinsky, Alex Kerfoot to the Winnipeg Jets for Ben Chiarot, 1st round pick 2014 (Kevin Fiala), 3rd round pick 2014 (Elvis Merzlikins).

The Winnipeg Jets get a starting goalie in Corey Crawford, a good two way center in Brandon Dubinsky and a good prospect in Alex Kerfoot, while the Rangers get Ben Chiarot, a prospect defenseman and 2 draft picks.


The Rangers also trade Kris Letang, JG Pageau, Matt Moulson to the San Jose Sharks for Tomas Hertl, Jason Demers, Matt Nieto, 1st round pick 2015 (Timo Meier).

The Sharks add a franchise Defenseman in Kris Letang, a great two way center in JG Pageau and a 20 goal scorer in Matt Moulson, while the Rangers get Tomas Hertl, a great young forward, Jason Demers, Matt Nieto and a 1st round pick.


Paul Stastny, Travis Zajac, Alex Edler are traded to the to the Ottawa Senators for Mika Zibanejad, 2nd round pick 2014 (Brayden Point), 1st round pick 2015 (Thomas Chabot).

The Senators get 3 really good players in Stastny, Zajac and Edler, which turns them into a playoff team right away, while the Rangers get Mika Zibanejad, a center with star potential, a 1st round pick and a 2nd round pick. 


Dustin Byfuglien to the Florida Panthers for 2nd round pick 2014 (Christian Dvorak), 1st round pick 2015 (Brock Boeser), 2nd round pick 2015 (Erik Cernak).

Florida Panthers get a stud top pair defenseman in Dustin Byfuglien for 3 early picks in the upcoming drafts.

New York Rangers also trade Henrik Lundqvist, Patric Hornqvist to the Carolina Hurricanes for Anton Khudobin,  1st round pick 2014 (William Nylander), 2nd round pick 2015 (Sebastian Aho).

The Hurricanes get Henrik Lundqvist, one of the best goalies in the league and Patric Hornqvist, a top 6 scoring winger, while the Rangers get Anton Khudobin, a great backup goalie and 2 early draft picks.

Jordan Eberle, Gustav Nyquist, Ben Chiarot are traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs for Jake Gardiner, 3rd round pick 2014 (Igor Shesterkin).

The Maple Leafs get two top 6 forwards in Eberle and Nyquist also with a top 6 defenseman in Ben Chiarot, while the Rangers get Jake Gardiner, a top 4 defenseman and a 3rd round pick.

FANTASY HOCKEY WAIVER WIRE PLAYERS TO PICKUP

Here are some players you should pickup in Fantasy Hockey, sorted by position. Center Colton Sissons Colton Sissons is one of the best 4th line centers in the league, but in fantasy hockey, he could be even more valuable than he actually is in real life because of what he provides in the peripheral categories. So far this season Sissions has 5 goals, 1 PPP, 1 SHP, 12 PIM, 20 SOG, 89 FW, 15 hits, and 9 blocks. This is a terrific stat line and although you can't count on Sissons scoring a ton, he will fill out the FW, Hits, and blocks usually. Sissons is owned in 6% of fantasy leagues, snag him up while you can. Nick Bjugstad Nick Bjugstad is having an excellent year so far with the Arizona Coyotes, in fact he has played so well that he earned himself a promotion to play on the 2nd line along with Mattias Maccelli and Lawson Crouse.
