REBUILDING 2017-18 OTTAWA SENATORS

Coming off a successful run in the 2017 playoffs, the Ottawa Senators thought they were legit contenders in the Eastern Conference, so instead of rebuilding like they should have, they traded for Matt Duchene, which is now in hindsight one of the worst trades in recent memory.

The rebuild starts at the 2017 draft, where a few trades take place:

Ottawa Senators trade Erik Karlsson, Kyle Turris to the Carolina Hurricanes for Justin Faulk, Elias Lindholm, 1st round pick 2017, 1st round pick 2018.

The Carolina Hurricanes wanted to add that true number 1 defenseman and their aren't much better than Erik Karlsson. Kyle Turris will be a solid 3rd line center for them behind Sebastian Aho and Jordan Staal.

On the Flip side, the Senators get Justin Faulk, a top 4 defenseman who can step in and fill the void offensively and Elias Lindholm a very talented young player; the Sens also get 2 first round picks, which can be used to pick a core player.

The Senators also trade Mike Hoffman, Derick Brassard, 2nd round pick 2017 to the New York Rangers for Kevin Hayes, JT Miller.

Mike Hoffman and Derick Brassard are good players but they don't fit with direction of the team anymore as they are in a rebuild. Kevin Hayes and JT Miller are two players who are a bit younger and could potentially be used a trade bait later on.

Ryan Dzingel, Cody Ceci, Zack Smith are traded to the New Jersey Devils for Patrick Maroon, 2nd round pick 2017, 3rd round pick 2019.

The Devils need more depth on the team so adding players such as Dzingel, Ceci and Smith will help them a ton. On the flip side, the Senators get Patrick Maroon, who was a pending UFA and two draft picks.

At the 2017 draft, the Ottawa Senators trade picks 28, 36 to the Dallas Stars for picks 26, 39.

Changes in 2017 draft:

12-(from CAR) Martin Necas

26-(from DAL) Jake Oettinger

39-(from DAL) Alexandre Texier

121-Drake Batherson

The Ottawa Senators DON'T trade for Matt Duchene, as they aren't a contender anymore.

The Ottawa Senators finish the 2017-18 season with the 3rd worst record in the league but end up with the 4th pick in the 2018 draft.

Before the 2018 draft, the Senators make one major trade:

Ottawa Senators trade Mark Stone to the Nashville Predators for Kevin Fiala, Eeli Tolvanen, Calle Jarnkrok, 1st round pick 2019.

The Nashville Predators get an absolute star in Mark Stone, which will absolutely improve their forward core. On the flip side, the Ottawa Senators get an up and coming young forward in Kevin Fiala, a promising young prospect in Eeli Tolvanen, a solid role player in Calle Jarnkrok and a 1st round pick.

Changes in 2018 draft:

2-(from CAR) Andrei Svechnikov

4-Quinn Hughes

26-Joe Veleno

48-Akil Thomas

The Ottawa Senators finish the 2018-19 season with the worst record in the NHL but end up with the 3rd pick in the draft.

Before the 2019 draft, one major trade is made:

Ottawa Senators trade Kevin Hayes, Justin Faulk to the Anaheim Ducks for Sam Steel, Brandon Montour, Maxime Comtois, 1st round pick 2019.

The Anaheim Ducks address a major weakness on the team with the addition of Kevin Hayes and strength the depth down the middle; Justin Faulk will give the Anaheim Ducks that power play quarterback they have been searching for. On the Flip side, the Senators get three very promising young players in Steel, Comtois and Terry and a 1st round pick.

At the 2019 draft, Ottawa Senators trade picks 24, 29, 32 to the Florida Panthers for pick 13.

Changes in 2019 draft:

3-Kirby Dach

13-Spencer Knight

In Free Agency, the Ottawa Senators sign Robin Lehner to a 2 yr deal worth 5 million per season.

The Ottawa Senators finish the 2019-20 season with a much better record and end up with the 6th pick in the draft.

At the 2020 draft Ottawa Senators trade picks 46, 52 to the Montreal Canadiens for pick 40.

2020 Draft results:

6-Marco Rossi

22-(from NYI)-Mavrik Bourque

32-Yan Kuznetsov

40-William Villeneuve

53-Kasper Simontaival

Before the 2020-21 season, the Ottawa Senators make a few trades:

Ottawa Senators trade Elias Lindholm, Brandon Montour to the Calgary Flames for Rasmus Andersson, Oliver Kylington, 1st round pick 2021.

This blockbuster trade sees the Calgary Flames getting an elite player in Elias Lindholm and a top 4 defenseman in Brandon Montour, while the Ottawa Senators get a very underrated top 4 defenseman in Rasmus Andersson, a young defenseman in Oliver Kylington and a 1st round pick.

Eeli Tolvanen, Anthony Duclair are traded to the Edmonton Oilers for Adam Larsson, 2nd round pick 2021. If the Oilers make it to the second round of the playoffs, the Second round pick becomes a 1st round pick.

This mega trade sees the Edmonton Oilers land a pair of wingers to help out McDavid and Draisaitl, while the Ottawa Senators get a solid top 4 defenseman in Adam Larsson and a conditional 2nd round pick.

Colin White is traded to the Philadelphia Flyers for Morgan Frost, Robert Hagg, 2nd round pick 2021.

The Flyers get a very good 3rd line center in Colin White, which makes them very tough to go up against, while the Senators get Morgan Frost, a promising young forward, Robert Hagg, a physical young defenseman and a 2nd round pick.

By the 2020-21 season, the Ottawa Senators have build a young but very good team that could make a push to being a contending team.

2020-21 Ottawa Senators

A.Texier-K.Dach-A.Svechnikov

J.Veleno-JT.Miller-K.Fiala

M.Comtois-M.Necas-D.Batherson

C.Jarnkrok-S.Steel-T.Terry

T.Chabot-R.Andersson

Q.Hughes-A.Larsson

O.Kylington-R.Hagg

R.Lehner

J.Oettinger

Top Prospects:

F: M.Rossi, M.Bourque, A.Thomas, R.Hagg, K.Simontaival

D: Y.Kuznetsov, W.Villeneuve

G: S.Knight

The Ottawa Senators look like like a dynasty in the making and would be set to be a contending team for at least the next 5 years.

Fantasy Hockey Forwards to Trade For

Here is a list of Players who you should consider trading for in Fantasy Hockey. Tage Thompson Tage Thompson had very high expectations of him heading into this season but has been a massive disappointment to this point in the season with only 7 goals, 8 assists, 4 PPP, 60 SOG, and 99 FW. Thompson has been better after coming back from injury and you would think that he is going to eventually start putting points in bunches. Because of how bad Thompson's statline is this season. it would be a good idea to trade for him because you may not have to give up a lot in return.  Elias Lindholm Elias Lindholm is another player who has had a slow start to the season with only 7 goals, 10 assists, 3 PPP, 68 SOG, and 297 FW so far this season. Lindholm is definitely going to want to play better if he wants to increase his value for his next contract and also showcase himself for a trade at the deadline. If Lindholm gets dealt to a contending team, his fantasy value would drastically improve b

TIPS FOR DECIDING WHO TO KEEP FOR KEEPER/DYNASTY LEAGUES

Keeper fantasy leagues are a variation of traditional fantasy sports leagues where participants are allowed to keep a certain number of players from their previous season's roster onto their team for the upcoming season. The number of players that can be kept, as well as the specific rules regarding keeping players, vary from league to league and are typically determined by the league commissioner or by a set of agreed-upon rules among league members. In a keeper league, the kept players usually come with a cost, such as forfeiting a specific draft pick in the upcoming draft or having to pay a predetermined fee. This adds a strategic element to the game, as managers must decide which players to keep based on their performance, potential, and value relative to the cost of keeping them. Keeper leagues often provide a deeper level of engagement and strategy compared to standard fantasy leagues because managers need to consider long-term player development and roster management beyond

FANTASY HOCKEY WAIVER WIRE PLAYERS TO PICKUP

Here are some players you should pickup in Fantasy Hockey, sorted by position. Center Colton Sissons Colton Sissons is one of the best 4th line centers in the league, but in fantasy hockey, he could be even more valuable than he actually is in real life because of what he provides in the peripheral categories. So far this season Sissions has 5 goals, 1 PPP, 1 SHP, 12 PIM, 20 SOG, 89 FW, 15 hits, and 9 blocks. This is a terrific stat line and although you can't count on Sissons scoring a ton, he will fill out the FW, Hits, and blocks usually. Sissons is owned in 6% of fantasy leagues, snag him up while you can. Nick Bjugstad Nick Bjugstad is having an excellent year so far with the Arizona Coyotes, in fact he has played so well that he earned himself a promotion to play on the 2nd line along with Mattias Maccelli and Lawson Crouse. Bjugstad also gets time on Arizona's 2nd PP unit and 2nd PK unit. Bjugstad may not be a name who stands out to casuals, but his fantasy stat line is
