REDRAFTING COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS FOR A DECADE (2003-2013)

 The Columbus Blue Jackets drafted terribly from when they entered the NHL to 2013, they have many chances to draft franchise changing talent but they opted instead to draft players that would turn into the biggest bust in recent memory.

In this blog, i redraft the Columbus Blue Jackets for a decade and try to turn them into a contending team.


2003:

4-Ryan Suter over Nikolay Zherdev

49-David Backes over Dan Fritsche

103-Joe Pavelski over Kevin Jarman

168-Dustin Byfuglien over Marc Methot

The Columbus Blue Jackets draft 2 stud defenseman in Ryan Suter and Dustin Byfuglien as well as an elite scorer in Joe Pavelski and a very solid top 6 forward in David Backes.


2004:

8-Cory Schneider over Alexandre Picard

46-Brandon Dubinsky over Adam Pineault

59-Alex Goligoski over Kyle Wharton

133-Kris Versteeg over Petr Pohl

Columbus drafts a very good starting goalie in Cory Schneider along with a solid two way defenseman in Alex Goligoski, a solid two way center in Brandon Dubinsky and a nice role player in Kris Versteeg.


2005:

6-Anze Kopitar over Gilbert Brule

55-Kris Letang over Adam McQuaid

67-Ben Bishop over Kris Russell

101-Niklas Hjalmarsson over Jared Boll

The Blue Jackets strike gold in the 2005 draft, netting a superstar center in Anze Kopitar, a star defenseman in Kris Letang, a future vezina caliber goalie in Ben Bishop and a very good defensive defenseman in Niklas Hjalmarsson.


2006:

6-Derick Brassard

69-Brad Marchand over Steve Mason

85-Matt Beleskey over Tom Sestito

159-Andrew MacDonald over Jesse Dudas

This wasn't a very deep draft but the Blue Jackets still walk away from the draft with a star player in Brad Marchand, a very clutch forward in Derick Brassard, a borderline top 4 defenseman in Anderw MacDonald and 3rd line forward in Matt Beleskey.


2007:

7-Jakub Voracek 

37-Wayne Simmonds over Stefan Legein

68-Alex Killorn over Jake Hansen

158-Carl Hagelin over Allen York

The Blue Jackets did well in the 2007 draft, they end up with an all star caliber players in Jakub Voracek; they also drafted three very good role players in Alex Killorn, Wayne Simmonds and Carl Hagelin.


2008:

6-John Carlson over Nikita Filatov

37-Derek Stepan over Cody Goloubef

107-TJ Brodie over Steve Delisle

157-Cam Atkinson

The Blue Jackets hit a homerun in the 2008 draft getting 4 really impactful players, including John Carlson and Cam Atkinson. Derek Stepan will be a terrific 2nd line center and TJ Brodie can be a good top 4 defenseman for the Blue Jackets as well.


2009:

21-Ryan O'Reilly over John Moore

56-Tomas Tatar over Kevin Lynch

94-David Savard

137-Darcy Kuemper over Thomas Larkin

The Blue Jackets get 3 stud players in the 2009 draft in Ryan O'Reilly, Tomas Tatar and David Savard. Darcy Kuemper can be a good 1B behind Ben Bishop.


2010:

4-Vladimir Tarasenko over Ryan Johansen

34-Jason Zucker over Dalton Smith

102-Petr Mrazek over Mathieu Cordeil-Theirieault

124-Brendan Gallagher over Austin Madaisky

The Blue Jackets once again hit the jackpot in the draft landing three high impact wingers in Tarasenko, Zucker and Gallagher. Petr Mrazek could potentially be trade bait.


2011:

37-John Gibson over Boone Jenner

66-JG Pageau over JT Tynan

98-Johnny Gaudreau over Mike Reilly

158-Josh Manson over Lukas Sedlak

The Blue Jackets add to their already stacked pool of prospects by drafting John Gibson, a future stud in goal, Johnny Gaudreau, a star winger, Josh Manson, a top 4 defenseman and JG Pageau a top 6 center.


2012:

2-Morgan Rielly over Ryan Murray

31-Esa Lindell over Oscar Dansk

62-Joonas Korpisalo

95-Andreas Athanasiou over Josh Anderson

The Blue Jackets Add two top 4 defenseman in Morgan Reilly and Esa Lindell, which allows them to let Ryan Suter walk in Free Agency. Andreas Athanasiou can be a solid 3rd line player for the Blue jackets and Joonas Korpisalo is most likely going to be trade bait.


Before the 2013 draft, Cory Schneider is traded to the the New Jersey Devils for 1st round pick 2013.


2013:


9-(from NJ) Bo Horvat

14-Ryan Pulock over Alexander Wennberg

19-Anthony Mantha over Kerby Rychel

27-JT Compher over Marko Dano

50-Tyler Bertuzzi over Dillon Heatherington

Columbus adds more depth to the prospect pool by adding a rising stud defenseman in Ryan Pulock and a stud young winger in Anthony Mantha. They also add two very solid role players in JT Compher and Tyler Bertuzzi.


The Blue Jackets allow Matt Beleskey, Kris Versteeg and Niklas Hjalmarsson to leave in free agency.


By the 2013-14 season, the Columbus Blue Jackets have build a super team that has the potential to be a dynasty.


Before the 2013-14 season, a few trades are made due to salary cap purposes:

Columbus Blue Jackets trade Jakub Voracek, Alex Goligoski, Brandon Dubinsky to the Edmonton Oilers for David Perron, Jeff Petry, 1st round pick 2014 (Nikolaj Ehlers).

In this mega blockbuster deal, the Blue Jackets get David Perron to pair with Ryan O'Reilly and Jeff Petry, a young defenseman with some offensive upside and a 1st round pick, while the Oilers get Jakub Voracek, a star player that they really needed, Brandon Dubinsky, a great two way center and Alex Goligoski, a solid two way defenseman.

Columbus also trade Joe Pavelski, David Backes, TJ Brodie to the Minnesota Wild for Charlie Coyle, Jonas Brodin, 1st round pick 2014 (Alex Tuch).

The Columbus Blue Jackets get that top 4 defenseman to pair with John Carlson in Jonas Brodin, a promising young power forward in Charlie Coyle and a first round pick, while the Minnesota Wild get Joe Pavelski, an elite goal scorer, David Backes, a player with size, leadership and some goal scoring and TJ Brodie, a top 4 defenseman.

Derick Brassard, Wayne Simmonds are traded to the Boston Bruins for 2nd round pick 2015 (Brandon Carlo), 2nd round pick 2015 (Jordan Greenway), 2nd round pick 2015 (Rasmus Andersson).

The Boston Bruins get Derick Brassard, a clutch two way forward and Wayne Simmonds, a gritty power forward that can score for 3 2nd round picks.

The Blue Jackets also trade Jeff Petry, Josh Manson, Petr Mrazek, Alex Tuch to the Ottawa Senators for Zack Smith, 1st round pick 2015 (Thomas Chabot).

This big blockbuster trade sees a few players including Jeff Petry, Josh Manson, Petr Mrazek, Alex Tuch get deal to the Ottawa Senators for Zach Smith and a 1st round pick.

Andrew MacDonald is dealt to the Philadelphia Flyers for 2nd round pick 2015, 3rd round pick 2016.

The Philadelphia Flyers receive Andrew MacDonald from the Columbus Blue Jackets for a pair of draft picks.

Here are some players you should pickup in Fantasy Hockey, sorted by position. Center Colton Sissons Colton Sissons is one of the best 4th line centers in the league, but in fantasy hockey, he could be even more valuable than he actually is in real life because of what he provides in the peripheral categories. So far this season Sissions has 5 goals, 1 PPP, 1 SHP, 12 PIM, 20 SOG, 89 FW, 15 hits, and 9 blocks. This is a terrific stat line and although you can't count on Sissons scoring a ton, he will fill out the FW, Hits, and blocks usually. Sissons is owned in 6% of fantasy leagues, snag him up while you can.
