REDRAFTING TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS FOR A DECADE (2000-2010)

The Toronto Maple Leafs weren't very good in the 2000s; a big reason for this is because the Maple Leafs didn't draft very well.
In this blog, i will redraft the Toronto Maple Leafs for a decade in hopes of turning them into a contending team.

2000:

24-Justin Williams over Brad Boyes
51-Antoine Vermette over Kris Vernarsky
90-Lubomir Visnovsky over Jean Francois Racine
100-Deryk Engelland over Miguel Delise

The Toronto Maple Leafs draft 3 really solid players in Justin Williams, Antoine Vermette and Lubomir Visnovsky as well as a depth defenseman in Deryk Engelland.

2001:

17-Tim Gleason over Carlo Colaiacovo
39-Mike Cammalleri over Karel Pilar
82-Patrick Sharp over Brandon Bell
134-Kevin Bieksa over Kyle Wellwood

The Maple Leafs draft two very good scoring wingers in Mike Cammalleri and Patrick Sharp as well as two solid defenseman in Tim Gleason and Kevin Bieksa.

2002:

24-Cam Ward over Alex Steen
57-Johnny Boychuk over Matt Stajan
74-Frans Nielsen over Todd Ford
88-Matthew Lombardi over Dominik D'Amour

Toronto drafts two very good centers in Frans Nielsen and Matthew Lombardi as well as an all star caliber goalie in Cam Ward.
Johnny Boychuk could potentially be a top 4 defenseman on the team as well.

2003:

57-David Backes over John Doherty
158-Joe Pavelski over John Mitchell
220-Tobias Enstrom over Jeremy Williams
238-Brian Elliott over Shaun Landolt

The Maple Leafs draft two all star caliber forwards, Joe Pavelski and David Backes as well as a very solid defenseman in Tobias Enstrom;
Brian Elliott could be a starter in the NHL but not over Cam Ward, which is why he could be trade bait.

2004:

90-Alexander Edler over Justin Pogge
113-Ryan Callahan over Roman Kukumberg
157-Mark Streit over Dmitry Vorobyov
187-Anton Khudobin over Robbie Earl

The Maple Leafs didn't have a 1st or 2nd round pick in this draft but they still walk away with two very good defenseman in Alex Edler and Mark Streit,
as well as a very good powerforward in Ryan Callahan.

2005:

21-Tuukka Rask
82-Keith Yandle over Phil Oreskovic
153-Patric Hornqvist over Alex Berry
216-Anton Stralman

The Maple Leafs still draft Tuukka Rask and Anton Stralman but they will also draft Keith Yandle, an offensive defenseman and Patric Hornqvist, a goal scoring powerforward.

2006:

13-Nick Foligno over Jiri Tlusty
44-Artem Anisimov over Nikolay Kulimen
99-James Reimer
161-Viktor Stalberg

This wasn't a very deep draft but the Maple Leafs still manage to draft some players that add to the depth of the roster;
Nick Foligno and Artem Anisimov both have top 6 potential and James Reimer will likely be trade bait.

2007:

74-Alex Killorn over Dale Mitchell
99-Jamie Benn over Matt Frattin
104-Jake Muzzin over Benn Winnett
164-Nick Bonino over Chris DiDomenico

The Leafs hit the lottery in this draft drafting a star forward in Jamie Benn and two other good forwards in Alex Killorn and Nick Bonino;
Jake Muzzin was also drafted, he will be a stud defenseman in the future.

2008:

5-Erik Karlsson over Luke Schenn
60-Braden Holtby over Jimmy Hayes
128-Jared Spurgeon over Greg Pateryn
129-Cam Atkinson over Joel Champagne

The Maple Leafs get 4 really good players in the 2008 draft; superstar defenseman Erik Karlsson and star goalie Braden Holtby.
They also geet Cam Atkinson and Jared Spurgeon, some of the hidden gems in this draft.

2009:

7-Nazem Kadri
50-Brian Dumoulin over Denny Ryan
58-Tomas Tatar over Jesse Blacker
68-Mattias Ekholm oveer Jamie Devane

The Leafs address a major hole at center with the addition of Nazem Kadri and add to their defensive depth with the additions of Mattais Ekholm and Brian Dumoulin.
Tomas Tatar could be trade bait for the Leafs as there is a log jam of wingers on the team.

2010:

43-Calle Jarnkrok over Bradley Ross
62-Mark Stone over Gregg McKegg
79-Philipp Grubauer over Sondre Olden
116-John Klingberg over Petter Granberg

The Leafs get two future star players in Mark Stone and John Klingberg as well as a good role player in Calle Jarnkrok.
Philipp Grubauer isn't likely to fit into the goalie rotation, so he might be traded.

Lubomir Visnovsky, Tim Gleason, Matthew Lombardi, Deryk Engelland leave in free agency in the summer of 2010.

By the 2010-2011 season, the Toronto Maple Leafs have put together an amazing roster

The Maple Leafs need to make a few trades due to salary cap purposes:

Toronto Maple Leafs trade Cam Ward, Mike Cammalleri, Frans Nielsen, Mark Streit to the Colorado Avalanche for Paul Stastny, Ryan O'Reilly, 2nd round pick 2012 (Colton Parayko).
This is a huge trade which gives Colorado a starting goalie, two top 6 forwards and a top pair defenseman, while the leafs get two top centers in Stastny and O'Reilly,
along with a 2nd round pick in 2012.

Maple Leafs also trade Jared Spurgeon, Antoine Vermette, David Backes to the St.Louis Blues for TJ Oshie, David Perron, 2nd round pick 2011 (Brandon Saad).
This trades give the Blues a top 4 defenseman and two top 6 forwards, while the Maple Leafs get Oshie and Perron, two top 6 forwards and a 2nd round pick in 2011.

Kevin Bieksa, Joe Pavelski are traded to the San Jose Sharks for Marc Eduord Vlasic, 1st round pick 2012 (Tomas Hertl).
This trade gives the Sharks an elite scorer in Joe Pavelski and a top 4 defenseman in Kevin Bieksa;
on the flip side the Leafs would get Marc Eduord Vlasic, a top 4 defenseman and a 1st round pick.

Patric Hornqvist are traded to the New York Islanders for Josh Bailey, 2nd round pick 2011 (Boone Jenner).
The Leafs already have enough powerforwards, so they trade Patric Hornqvist for Josh Bailey and 2nd round pick.

James Reimer is traded to the Florida Panthers for Michael Frolik, 2nd round pick 2011 (Vincent Trocheck).
The Panthers get their starting goalie in James Reimer for Michael Frolik and a 2nd round pick.

Tobias Enstrom is traded to the Ottawa Senators for 3rd round pick 2012 (Shayne Gostisbehere), 3rd round pick 2012 (Matt Murray).
The Senators get a solid puck moving defenseman in Tobias Enstrom for two 3rd round picks in 2012.

2010-11 Toronto Maple Leafs

Ja.Benn-P.Stastny-J.Williams
P.Sharp-R.O'Reilly-TJ.Oshie
N.Foligno-A.Anisimov-J.Bailey
V.Stalberg-N.Kadri-M.Frolik

M-E.Vlasic-E.Karlsson

Fantasy Hockey Keeper League Advice

Keeper leagues add a layer of strategy and long-term planning to fantasy hockey. Every keeper league has its own unique rules and scoring settings, so adjust your strategy accordingly. By following these tips and adapting to your league's specific dynamics, you can increase your chances of long-term success. Here are some tips to help you dominate your Fantasy Hockey Keeper Leagues. Number of Keepers and League Settings When deciding on keepers, it is very important to know how many keepers the league allows you to keep and the league scoring system, because there are players that work better in H2H CAT leagues as opposed to H2H leagues with standard scoring categories.  If you can only keep a few players, focus on those who provide the most value in your specific scoring format. Keep players who excel in categories that are heavily weighted in your league (e.g., power-play points, hits, blocks, faceoffs). If the league uses Rotisserie or Points settings, you will have to take that...

TIPS FOR DECIDING WHO TO KEEP FOR KEEPER/DYNASTY LEAGUES

Keeper fantasy leagues are a variation of traditional fantasy sports leagues where participants are allowed to keep a certain number of players from their previous season's roster onto their team for the upcoming season. The number of players that can be kept, as well as the specific rules regarding keeping players, vary from league to league and are typically determined by the league commissioner or by a set of agreed-upon rules among league members. In a keeper league, the kept players usually come with a cost, such as forfeiting a specific draft pick in the upcoming draft or having to pay a predetermined fee. This adds a strategic element to the game, as managers must decide which players to keep based on their performance, potential, and value relative to the cost of keeping them. Keeper leagues often provide a deeper level of engagement and strategy compared to standard fantasy leagues because managers need to consider long-term player development and roster management beyond ...

2024 Offseason Preview ft. New Jersey Devils

The New Jersey Devils the playoffs in the 2023-24 season after making it into the second round of the playoffs last season, and finished the season with a total of 81 points, a 38-39-5 record; With Jack Hughes and Nico Hischier in the midst of their primes, the New Jersey Devils really need to start to buckle down and put together the pieces for a contending team. The good news is that the New Jersey Devils have the benefit of having the 10th overall pick, which they could move to acquire a netminder, and they also have plenty of cap space to add other players as well. This coming offseason is a big one for the New Jersey Devils front office because after striking out on a netminder last offseason, the pressure to acquire a netminder this offseason is immense for GM Tom Fitzgerald, who might be on the hotseat if he can't find a way to fix the mess. Before the 2024 NHL Draft, the New Jersey Devils make two major trades New Jersey Devils acquire Jacob Markstrom, Matthew Coronato, 1st...
