REDRAFTING NEW JERSEY DEVILS FOR A DECADE (2000-2010)



The New Jersey Devils were successful in winning stanley cups in the early 2000s however their drafting woes throughout the 2000s have led them to their downfall.

If the New Jersey Devils drafted well during those years, they could have remained on top for much longer.

In this blog, i will redraft the New Jersey Devils from 2000-2010s.

Rules for the redraft:

Must select a player in every round
Must draft 4 players in every draft

2000:

22-Niklas Kronwall over David Hale
62-Paul Martin
76-Dominic Moore over Michael Rupp
125-John Michael Liles over Phil Cole

The Devils upgrade the Defense in the pipeline with the additions of Niklas Kronwall, Paul Martin and John Michael Liles;
they might play a major role on defense moving forward.

2001:

28-Derek Roy over Adrian Foster
48-Jason Pominville over Pihlman
67-Craig Anderson over Robin Lebanc
72-Patrick Sharp over Brandon Nolan

The Devils add some offensive firepower with the Additions of Derek Roy, Jason Pominville and Patrick Sharp;
they also add a very solid starter in Craig Anderson.

2002:

53-Duncan Keith over Barry Tallackson
64-Frans Nielsen over Jason Ryznar
117-James Wisniewski over Cam Janssen
154-Dennis Wideman over Krisjanis Redihs

The Devils add a stud defenseman in Duncan Keith and two more good defenseman with the additions of Dennis Wideman and James Wisniewski;
Frans Nielsen will be a terrific 2nd or third line center for the team depending on who else the Devils draft.

2003:

17-Zach Parise
42-Patrice Bergeron over Petr Vrana
167-Joe Pavelski over Zack Tarkir
197-Jaroslav Halak over Jason Smith

The Devils add three star caliber players in Zach Parise, Patrice Bergeron and Joe Pavelski,
as well as a very solid starter in Jaroslav Halak.

2004:

19-Travis Zajac
155-Mark Streit over Alexander Mikhailishin
185-Pekka Rinne over Josh Disher
282-Jannik Hansen over Valeri Klimov

The Devils add a star goalie in Pekka Rinne, a very good 2nd line center in Travis Zajac and a top pair defenseman in Mark Streit;
all these players will be key contributors on the team in the future.

2005:

23-TJ Oshie over Niclas Bergfors
38-Paul Stastny over Jeff Frazee
84-Ben Bishop over Mark Fraser
99-Keith Yandle over Patrick Davis

The Devils land 3 stellar players in Paul Stastny, TJ Oshie and Keith Yandle, as well as a star goalie in Ben Bishop,
however Bishop might become trade bait because the Devils drafted Rinne in the previous draft.

2006:

30-Milan Lucic over Matt Corrente
58-Brad Marchand over Alexander Vasyunov
148-Mathieu Perreault over Olivier Magnan
178-Leo Komarov over Tony Romano

The Devils improve their depth on left wing with the additions of Milan Lucic, Brad Marchand, Mathieu Perreault and Leo Komarov.
Marchand would be a great player to complement Patrice Bergeron and Lucic might become trade bait.

2007:

57-Wayne Simmonds over Mike Hoffel
79-Jamie Benn over Nick Palmieri
87-Alec Martinez over Corbin McPherson
117-Jake Muzzin over Matt Halischuk

The Devils add a superstar in Jamie Benn, two great defenseman in Jake Muzzin and Alec Martinez and a good powerforward in Wayne Simmonds;
Muzzin, Martinez will be important for salary cap reasons, so they don't have to overpay their overpay their veteran defenseman.

2008:

24-John Carlson over Mattias Tedenby
82-Adam Henrique
112-Gustav Nyquist over Matt Delahey
142-Cam Atkinson oveer Kory Nagy

The Devils add a stud defenseman in John Carlson and a speed demon in Cam Atkinson;
Adam Henrique and Gustav Nquist add depth in the pipeline.

2009:

20-Ryan O'Reilly over Jacob Josefson
54-Tyson Barrie over Eric Gelinas
73-Mattias Ekholm over Alexander Urbom
114-Mike Hoffman over Seth Helgeson

The Devils add 4 very good prospects in Ryan O'Reilly, Tyson Barrie, Mattias Ekholm and Mike Hoffman;
they should be a part of the Devils future after they move on from their older stars.

2010:

38-Jason Zucker over Jon Merrill
84-Philipp Grubauer over Scott Wedgewood
114-John Klingberg over Joe Faust
174-Mark Stone over Maxime Clermont

The Devils get add more riches to their pipeline with the additions of Mark Stone, Jason Zucker, John Klingberg;
Philipp Grubauer will also add to the depth in goal in the pipeline.

By the 2010-11 season, the New Jersey Devils would have put together a stanley cup caliber team,
but they would have to make some trades for Salary cap purposes:

Paul Martin, Mark Streit, James Wisnewski, Dominic Moore, Janik Hansen leave the Devils in Free Agency.

Trades:

New Jersey Devils trade Jaroslav Halak to the St.Louis for 2nd round pick 2011
Ben Bishop is traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning for 2nd round pick 2011, 2nd round pick 2012
Milan Lucic, Jason Pominville, Niklas Kronwall, 1st round pick 2011 are dealt to the Nashville Predators for Ryan Suter, Patric Hornqvist
Dennis Wideman, Derek Roy, 1st round pick 2012 to the Minneosta Wild for Brent Burns
John Michael Liles, Patrick Sharp to the Columbus Blue Jackets for Derick Brassard, Kris Russell
