REBUILDING 2012-13 NEW JERSEY DEVILS

After Zach Parise left in Free Agency, the New Jersey Devils were a mess and then after Ilya Kovalchuk decided to "Retire" and return to play in Russia,
the Devils were left witha mediocre roster that couldn't contend for the playoffs anymore.

The Rebuild starts in 2012 Draft

Instead of waiting on Zach Parise, the Devils trade his rights to the Minnesota Wild for Jason Zucker.
Zach Parise was going to sign with the Wild anyways, so it makes sense to get something for him.
Jason Zucker was buried in the depth chart of Wild for years, he would have found success much sooner with the Devils.

Martin Brodeur is Traded to the Chicago Blackhawks for Nick Leddy, 2nd round pick 2013.
If Chicago Wins the Stanley Cup, the 2nd round pick becomes a 1st round pick.
Martin Broduer gives the Chicago Blackhawks a veteran goalie they can lean on in the playoffs,
while the Devils get a young defenseman in Nick Leddy who was always in Joel Queneville's doghouse.

New Jersey Devils also trade Patrik Elias to the Florida Panthers for Tomas Fleischmann, 1st round pick 2014.
The Florida Panthers get a star player in Patrick Elias, while the Devils add a skilled forward in Fleischmann and a 1st round pick.

Travis Zajac, Andy Greene are traded to the Montreal Canadiens for Lars Eller, 2nd round pick 2012.
This trade gives the Montreal Canadiens two very stable and reliable players;
on the flip side the Devils get a bright young center in Lars Eller and a 2nd round pick.

David Clarkson is traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs for 2nd round pick 2012, 3rd rd pick 2013.
David Clarkson doesn't fit the play style that the New look New Jersey Devils will have,
so they should get top value for him before he leaves in free agency in 2013.

Changes in 2012 Draft

29-Tanner Pearson over Stefan Matteau
35-Colton Parayko over Matt Finn
51-Jacob Slavin over Dalton Thrower
96-Connor Hellebuyck over Ben Thompson

New Jersey Devils sign Jaromir Jagr to a 3 yr deal worth 4.5 million per season.
Jaromir Jagr is a draw even if he is 42 and he would be the best player on the roster by far.

Olli Jokinen, PA Parenteau to 2 yr deals worth 2.5 million per season.
The Devils need to add some impact offensive players so they sign so rentals in Jokinen and Parenteau.

The New Jersey Devils finish the lockout shortened 2012-13 season with the worst record in the NHL
and end up with the 2nd pick in the draft.

Ilya Kovalchuk still retires to play in Russia but in doing so that means the Devils will get their 1st round pick back
that would have been taken away due to Cap Circumvention.

The Devils don't need to trade for Cory Schneider anymore because the Devils are in rebuild mode now.
Since the Chicago Blackhawks won the Stanley cup in 2013, the Devils get their 1st round pick in 2013.

At the 2013 draft, the New Jersey Devils trade Nick Leddy, 2nd round pick 2013 to the Detroit Red Wings for Gustav Nyquist, Tomas Tatar.
The Devils need more goal scoring while the Red Wings need a pick moving defenseman;
this is a win-win trade.

New Jersey also trades pick 30 to the Washington Capitals for picks 43, 59, 84.
There really isn't any player the Devils want to select with the 30th pick so they trade down add add more draft picks.

Changes in 2013 draft

2-Aleksander Barkov
43 (from WPG)-Tristan Jarry
59 (from WPG)-Brett Pesce
73-Jake Guentzel over Ryan Kujawinski
84 (from WPG)-Oliver Bjorkstrand
160-Dominik Kubalik over Myles Bell

The New Jersey Devils are much improved during the 2013-14 season but they still finish with the 6th worst record in the league.

The Devils received the Florida Panthers' 1st round pick in 2014 in the Patrick Elias trade, so they also will have the 3rd pick in the draft.

At the 2014 draft, New Jersey Devils trade pick 6 to the Boston Bruins for pick 25, 56, 1st round pick 2015.
The Devils already got Draisaitl with the 3rd pick so they should trade back and get more assets.

Changes in 2014 Draft

3 (From FLA)-Leon Draisaitl
25 (from BOS)-David Pastrnak
41-Christian Dvorak over Josh Jacobs
56-Brayden Point over Ryan Donato

The New Jersey Devils just miss the playoffs in the 2014-15 season, they have the 14th pick in the draft.

The Devils received a 2015 1st round pick from the Bruins in a draft day trade, so they will also have the 15 pick in the draft.

Changes in 2015 draft

14-Kyle Connor
15 (from BOS)-Thomas Chabot

In the 2015 offseason, the Devils make a huge blockbuster trade acquiring Bo Horvat, 1st round pick 2016 (Jakob Chychrun) from
the Vancouver Canucks for Adam Larsson, Gustav Nyquist, Jason Zucker.
This is a massive deal for both sides that sees the Canucks get a top four defenseman in Larsson and two very good wingers in Tatar in Zucker;
on the flip side of the deal the Devils strike gold getting a great two way center in Bo Horvat and a 1st round pick, used to select Chychrun.

Tanner Pearson, Christian Dvorak, Damon Severson are traded to the Anaheim Ducks for Rickard Rakell, Kyle Palmieri, Sami Vatanen.
This is another huge deal that sees the Anaheim Ducks get two very good young players in Pearson and Dvorak as well as a rising young D man in Severson;
On the flip side, the Devils get two great wingers in Rakell and Palmieri, both of whom will be top 6 forwards and versatile D man in Vatanen.

By the 2015-16 season, the Devils are a playoff team but they get knocked out of the playoffs early due to their inexperience.

Because the Devils don't have Adam Larsson anymore, they don't make the trade for Taylor Hall, which might be better in the long term.

The Devils made a few trades before the 2016-17 season:

New Jersey Devils trade Colton Parayko, Adam Henrique to the Nashville Predators for Ryan Ellis, Calle Jarnkrok
Tomas Tatar, 2nd round pick 2017 is traded to the Carolina Hurricanes for Teuvo Teravainen.
If the Devils win the Stanley cup
, the 2nd round pick becomes a 1st round pick.
Lars Eller, Dominik Kubalik to the LA Kings for Brayden McNabb, Adrian Kempe, 3rd round pick 2017.
Tristan Jarry is traded to the Winnipeg Jets for Adam Lowry, Joel Armia, 2nd round pick 2017.

This is how the 2016-17 New Jersey Devils lineup looks like:

L.Draisaitl-A.Barkov-D.Pastrnak
T.Teräväinen-B.Horvat-K.Palmieri
J.Guentzel-B.Point-R.Rakell
C.Jarnkrok-A.Lowry-J.Armia

J.Slavin-R.Ellis
J.Chychrun-B.Pesce
B.McNabb-S.Vatanen

C.Hellebuyck
K.Kinkaid

Prospects:
F: Kyle Connor, Oliver Bjorkstrand, Adrian Kempe
D: Thomas Chabot
G: Mackenzie Blackwood

The 2016-17 season seems to be the season that all the young players for the Devils take their game to the next level,
and they run through all the competition in route a Stanley cup victory.

With the Roster the Devils have now, they potential to be the NHL's next dynasty.

2024 Offseason Preview ft. New Jersey Devils

The Vancouver Canucks' 2023-2024 season was a successful and surprising campaign because they were not expected to be major contenders initially, however, the Canucks exceeded expectations by winning their division and making a significant playoff run. Vancouver Canucks won the Pacific Divison title and managed to defeat Nashville in 7 games even though they were playing without Thatcher Demko and moved onto to play the Edmonton Oilers in the second round, but they would ultimately fall short in Game 7. After the success of last season, Vancouver should look to improve the team in the offseason, but they only have so much cap space to fill many holes on the roster.
