2024 Offseason Preview ft. Calgary Flames

The Calgary Flames just missed out on the playoffs again in the 2023-24 season, and finished the season with a total of 81 points, a 38-39-5 record; they like a few other teams in the Pacific Division seem like they are going through a rebuild and it might take a few seasons of losing before they are back in the playoffs. The first order of business is moving Jacob Markstrom, who has become disgruntled with the trade rumors, and they have to do everything in their power to get the most in return for their number 1 goalie. GM Craig Conroy will be a very busy man from now and the draft as they try to work out a deal for the Swedish netminder. If the Calgary Flames play their cards right this offseason, they will be building a very good team for the future.

Before the 2024 NHL Draft, the Calgary Flames make two trades

Calgary Flames trade Jacob Markstrom, Matthew Coronato, 1st Round pick '24 (from VAN) to the New Jersey Devils for Alexander Holtz, Jonas Siegenthaler, Akira Schmid, 1st round pick '24.

This trade works out great for both teams, New Jersey gets their number 1 goalie in Jacob Markstrom, which gives them a goalie tandem with Jacob Markstrom and Jake Allen, a vast improvement from last season and a young goal-scoring winger, Matthew Coronato, who has been lighting it up in the AHL, but couldn't crack the lineup with Calgary. For Calgary, they get Alexander Holtz, a top 10 pick in 2020, but has fallen out of favor with the Devils, Jonas Siegenthaler, who struggled with injuries and is going to be paid 3.4 million per season for the next 4 years, and Akira Schmid, a solid goalie to tandem to have in the pipeline after Dan Vladar's contract is up. The two teams will exchange 1st round picks, meaning Calgary will get the 10th overall pick, and New Jersey gets Calgary's first-round pick they got from Vancouver, the 28th overall pick.

A 3 team trade is made between the Calgary Flames, Boston Bruins, Tampa Bay Lightning

Calgary Flames get Trent Frederic, Jesperi Kotkaniemi, 1st round pick '24 (from CAR), cond. 2nd round pick '26 (from BOS). *2026 2nd round pick becomes a 1st round pick, if Sharongovich scores 25 or more goals.*

Boston Bruins get Martin Necas, Yegor Sharongovich

Carolina Hurricanes get Brandon Carlo, Andrew Mangiapane, 1st round pick '25 (from BOS)

This trade benefits all teams involved, Calgary has a lot of cap space after trading away Jacob Markstrom, so they weaponize it to add a first-round pick from Carolina for taking on Jesperi Kotkaniemi's terrible contract. Calgary also gets Trent Frederic, and a potential first-round pick from Boston for Yegor Sharongovich, who is coming off a 30-goal season. Boston adds Martin Necas and Yegor Sharongovich, which improves their offense tremendously, while Carolina acquires Brandon Carlo, Andrew Mangiapane, and a 1st round pick.

Calgary Flames have only have 10 total picks in the 2024 NHL Draft, here are those selections.

2024 NHL Draft:

9-Konsta Helenius (RW)

10-Zayne Parekh (D)

27-Lucas Pettersson (C)

41-Dean Letourneau (C)

62-Veeti Vasainen (D)

74-Marcus Gidlof (G)

84-Eriks Matelko (LW/C)

106-Viggo Gustafsson (D)

125-Markus Loponen (C/RW)

170-Austin Burnevick (LW)

The Calgary were able to cash in big in this draft, drafting Konsta Helenius, Zayne Parekh, and Lucas Pettersson in the first round, followed by Dean Letourneau and Veeti Vasainen in the second round, then Marcus Gidlof and Eriks Matelko in the third round. Adding players such as Viggo Gustafsson and Markus Loponen and Austin Burnevich helps improve Calgary's prospect depth and sets them up very well for the future.

Pending UFAs

Oliver Kylington (D)

AJ Greer (LW)

Jordan Oesterle (D)

Dennis Gilbert (D)

Calgary Flames don't re-sign any of their pending UFAs.

Re-signed RFAs:

Dustin Wolf (G)-2yrs/3.1M per

Akira Schmid (G)-1yr/0.9M

Nikita Okhotiuk (D)-2yrs/0.9M per (two-way)

Jacob Pelletier (LW)-2yrs/0.89M per

Ilya Solovyov (D)-2yrs/0.85M per (two-way

Before the season, one trade is made:

Calgary Flames acquire Josh Anderson, Justin Barron, 1st round pick '25, 3rd round pick '25 from the Montreal Canadiens for 3rd round pick '26.

This is a straight cap dump for the Montreal Canadiens, but it comes at the steep price of adding Justin Barron and two picks to unload Josh Anderson's contract, who has 3 years left on his deal, with a 5.5 million annual cap hit.

Fantasy Hockey Forwards to Trade For

Here is a list of Players who you should consider trading for in Fantasy Hockey. Tage Thompson Tage Thompson had very high expectations of him heading into this season but has been a massive disappointment to this point in the season with only 7 goals, 8 assists, 4 PPP, 60 SOG, and 99 FW. Thompson has been better after coming back from injury and you would think that he is going to eventually start putting points in bunches. Because of how bad Thompson's statline is this season. it would be a good idea to trade for him because you may not have to give up a lot in return.  Elias Lindholm Elias Lindholm is another player who has had a slow start to the season with only 7 goals, 10 assists, 3 PPP, 68 SOG, and 297 FW so far this season. Lindholm is definitely going to want to play better if he wants to increase his value for his next contract and also showcase himself for a trade at the deadline. If Lindholm gets dealt to a contending team, his fantasy value would drastically improve b

TIPS FOR DECIDING WHO TO KEEP FOR KEEPER/DYNASTY LEAGUES

Keeper fantasy leagues are a variation of traditional fantasy sports leagues where participants are allowed to keep a certain number of players from their previous season's roster onto their team for the upcoming season. The number of players that can be kept, as well as the specific rules regarding keeping players, vary from league to league and are typically determined by the league commissioner or by a set of agreed-upon rules among league members. In a keeper league, the kept players usually come with a cost, such as forfeiting a specific draft pick in the upcoming draft or having to pay a predetermined fee. This adds a strategic element to the game, as managers must decide which players to keep based on their performance, potential, and value relative to the cost of keeping them. Keeper leagues often provide a deeper level of engagement and strategy compared to standard fantasy leagues because managers need to consider long-term player development and roster management beyond

FANTASY HOCKEY WAIVER WIRE PLAYERS TO PICKUP

Here are some players you should pickup in Fantasy Hockey, sorted by position. Center Colton Sissons Colton Sissons is one of the best 4th line centers in the league, but in fantasy hockey, he could be even more valuable than he actually is in real life because of what he provides in the peripheral categories. So far this season Sissions has 5 goals, 1 PPP, 1 SHP, 12 PIM, 20 SOG, 89 FW, 15 hits, and 9 blocks. This is a terrific stat line and although you can't count on Sissons scoring a ton, he will fill out the FW, Hits, and blocks usually. Sissons is owned in 6% of fantasy leagues, snag him up while you can. Nick Bjugstad Nick Bjugstad is having an excellent year so far with the Arizona Coyotes, in fact he has played so well that he earned himself a promotion to play on the 2nd line along with Mattias Maccelli and Lawson Crouse. Bjugstad also gets time on Arizona's 2nd PP unit and 2nd PK unit. Bjugstad may not be a name who stands out to casuals, but his fantasy stat line is
